In a groundbreaking move, Burkina Faso has introduced a new prison reform that prioritizes rehabilitation, agricultural development, and restorative justice. According to the new criminal law, prisoners and those awaiting sentences can work in agriculture, with a significant incentive – a month of work equivalent to a three-month reduction in sentence.

This innovative approach was announced by Ibrahim Traoré, who emphasized that the country’s laws must represent African values. “Henceforth, our prisoners will be working in our agriculture sector while their sentences are reduced,” he stated.
