No Electricity Grid Collapse in 2025, Says TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has debunked rumors of a national grid collapse, labeling them “mischievous and misleading.” The rumors emerged after a disturbance on the national grid left some areas without electricity on February 12. However, TCN clarified that the incident was a tripping incident, not a system collapse, affecting power supply in Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo.

According to TCN, the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 kilovolt (kV) transmission line tripped, while the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was undergoing scheduled maintenance. This disruption caused a cascade effect, leading to outages in some areas, but other parts of the country remained unaffected. TCN assured that “full restoration of bulk power supply to affected areas has since been completed.”

It’s worth noting that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and governed by industry documents, which reserve the exclusive right to provide information to the public about events and the status of the grid for the National Control Centre System Operator or its designated backup.
